Trillium Energy Solutions has supercharged its footprint in the clean fuel sector with the acquisition of 44 compressed and renewable natural gas (RNG) stations from U.S. Energy, marking a major step forward in its expansion strategy. Finalized in late April, the deal boosts Trillium’s network to 107 fueling stations, significantly extending its reach across major freight corridors in 15 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces.

The newly added stations, formerly part of the GAIN Clean Fuel brand, strengthen Trillium’s presence in the fast-growing RNG market. As the alternative fuel arm of Love’s Travel Stops, Trillium is positioning itself to serve an expanding base of long-haul fleets seeking lower-emission fueling options.

“This move is about making RNG more available, more reliable, and more convenient,” a Trillium spokesperson said. “It’s a win for our fleet partners and for the environment.”

RNG, derived from organic waste, has emerged as a compelling diesel alternative that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Trillium’s move reflects a broader trend. Rather than building new infrastructure, clean fuel providers are rapidly consolidating to gain ground, saving time, cutting costs, and reinforcing their market position.

Industry analysts say the deal signals increasing maturity in the clean fuel space, where companies are racing to secure distribution networks as demand accelerates. The acquisition also raises competitive pressure on dominant players like Clean Energy Fuels Corp., which currently operates over 600 RNG and CNG stations.

While integration and regulatory shifts pose ongoing challenges, Trillium appears well-equipped for long-term growth. The company now holds a stronger hand in influencing how RNG is delivered and accessed across North America.

As more fleets adopt greener solutions, this acquisition lays the groundwork for broader industry transformation. In the race toward clean transportation, scale, speed, and infrastructure access are defining who leads the charge.
